Do You Need A Math Night Art Project?

Making Math Trees

My school had quite a successful Math Night last week. And an art/math lesson was part of the fun!

I made a poster that was filled with different math symbols-  % & ( ) # < > ? + =  and numbers 12456, etc. Most of the symbols the kids were familiar with, but  there were some that were algebraic. To give them a hint of what they'll be learning about in the 8th grade.

There were also some examples of 'Math Trees' on the poster. These gave them a little idea of what their tree could possibly look like.

All we used for supplies was drawing paper and colored pencils.

The kids came up to my table and drew their own 'math trees' using the different math symbols. They stated out drawing the tree trunk and branches. Then they added the symbols in place of the leaves and grass. Some of the kids got really creative and also used the symbols as birds, flowers and the sun.

What do you think of our 'Math Trees'? What art lessons have you used on 'Math Night' that were successful? I'd love to hear about it!
